Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Audits are conducted throughout the community to recommend changes to the community’s physical environment that will help to reduce crime in this neighbourhood.  The Heritage Community Association in partnership with community members, community schools, Regina Police Services, businesses,  Regina Health Region, and the city of Regina, have establish audit teams to carry out methodical inspections throughout the entire community.  During these inspections the Audit Teams identify aspects of land use, infrastructure, and public spaces that contribute to the commission of crime in the Heritage Community.  An example of this might be inadequate lighting on a pedestrian pathway.

Based on the information gathered by the CPTED Audits, a formal analysis and recommendations will result and be tabled with the Regina Crime Prevention Commission for direction and follow-up with City Council and used to seek funding and policy changes to make beneficial change happen.

On The Move

The "On the Move" program is a nationally recognized physical activity program for girls. Heritage Community Association in partnership with Thomson Community School offers this 10-week program twice a year - in September and in February - on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. The girls help co-ordinate the program by choosing physical activities they find interesting as well as activities that promoted positive relationship building. The program is delivered in a non-judgmental environment where the girls are encouraged to try a variety of new physical activities. This program is offered free-of-charge to girls from the Heritage community grades 4 to 8 and we are able to accept 20 girls per session into the program. For more information, please contact our office at 757-9952.

Reach Into Parks

Reach into Parks is a summer lunch program offered free-of-charge to hungry children. The program, co-ordinated in partnership with the City of Regina operates for 6 weeks, Monday through Friday, starting in early July and ending in mid-August. This program serves bagged lunches to children at Maple Leaf pool. Funding is provided by Regina Education and Action on Child Hunger (REACH).

Star Quilts

This project is intended to provide the Heritage Community Association with an opportunityfor economic growth. The finished quilts will be sold and profits will be re-invested in the Heritage community. Funds earned will allow the Association to support and sustain the programs we offer children in our community and allow us to develop new initiatives (i.e. an inner city hip hop dance troupe).

This traditional quilt design is highly sought after in the aboriginal community and around the world. This project will have a very positive impact on our community, and at the same time, raise the profile of Heritage in the wider community. By creating opportunities to support our children and youth, we will build a sense of pride in our community's ability to create a healthy, safe, and vibrant community.

We are looking for volunteers with sewing skills and quilting experience who have a desire to contribute some time to our community's growth. If you would like to participate in this project call the Heritage office at 757-9952.

Volunteer Home Inspection Program

Heritage Community Association, in partnership with the City of Regina Bylaw Maintenance Division, has implemented a door-to-door home inspection program. The ongoing inspections are conducted by volunteers trained by the Bylaw Maintenance Division.

The goal of this program is to identify unsafe and unhealthy housing conditions that do not meet the City of Regina's minimum health and safety standards. A neglected house makes a poor home. The best thing you can do for your neighbourhood is care for your property. Well-maintained houses in well-maintained neighbourhoods keep their value.

Community residents need not put up with the eyesore of messy yards and junked vehicles in their neighbourhood.  As well as sub-standard housing conditions, our inspectors will be on the lookout for unsightly yards and junked vehicles.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer inspector or want more information on this program, please call the Heritage office at 757-9952
