QUEEN CITY MINOR BOX LACROSSE

2003                        NEWSLETTER             Volume 1

Welcome to what we are hoping will be another great year of Box Lacrosse in Regina. We wish to welcome all players back along with what we expect will be a number of new players. We are very excited to be able to offer a Tyke Division, for players age 8 and under, as well as an expanded Junior division, for players 17 – 21. All ages based on December 31, 2003.

QCMBL's intent is to encourage the players to develop skill and knowledge of lacrosse as well as good sportsmanship. We also want the coaches, players, referees and parents to respect each other. There is no room for verbal or physical abuse. If you are not prepared to participate on these terms, then do not register.

REGISTRATION
We have decided to offer last year’s players the first opportunity to register before opening registrations to new players. Your registration forms and cheques should be returned no later than February 7, 2003. The address is on the bottom of the registration form. This response will determine the number of spots that will be available to new players. Any registrations received after the registration deadline will be processed on a first come/registered basis. Registration preference will be given to players whose parents are willing to take an active role in the development of QCMBL. In person registration will take place on February 11 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Neighbourhood Center. A second night will be added if necessary. If you decide to leave registration to this night, you will be treated as a new player and subject to a waiting list if the division you wish to register in is full.

Divisions are as follows:
Tyke 1995 & under Fees to be determined
Novice 1993 & 1994 $120.00
Pee Wee 1991 & 1992 $120.00
Bantam 1989 & 1990 $130.00
Midget 1987 & 1988 $130.00
Junior 1982 – 1986 Fees to be determined

Fees for the Tyke and Junior divisions have not been determined. They will depend on the interest and extent of the respective programs. We are looking at offering a non-contact Tyke division where there will be a great deal of emphasis on teaching the basic skills of the game. If you have a son/daughter interested in playing in either of these divisions please send in a registration form so we can determine the number of players interested.

VOLUNTEERS
This league is run by volunteers willing to give up their time to develop the sport for their children. We are once again in a position where new parents must step forward and take an active roll in the organization and administration of the leagues affairs. Many of the current executive have assumed their roles for a number of years and are looking to move on, and/or reduce their involvement. Without some new people the league will be forced to downsize rather than expand. There are many opportunities to get involved in such as: President – Vacant; Vice-President – Vacant; Past President - Bruce Peberdy; Treasurer - Pat Hain; Secretary - Beth Bonnor and Andree Sieber; Registrar - Kim Maher; Scheduler - Shelly Cozman – could use another person; Facilities – Sherry Zeigler; Coaching Representative – Vacant; Equipment Manager - Devin Warren and Cam Dixon; Fundraising - Andree Sieber; Chief Official – Vacant; Statistics – Vacant; Discipline Committee – Darrell Liebrecht and Lynn Jacobson; Marketing Chairperson – Noreen Brucker; Web Site Operator – Judy Larson; Tournament Liason; Team Coaches; Managers and Treasurers. Please be reminded that two or three people can assume a position and reduce their respective workload.

Please give this some serious thought. If you have any questions regarding any of these positions you can access the Queen City web page at www.accesscomm.ca/nonprofits/qcmbl for a full description of the responsibilities involved. If you have any suggestions or comments on how you can help out with the league, please contact Kim Maher at 525-0054 or Bruce Peberdy at 545-1553.
We will be offering an incentive to those who volunteer to work on the Executive or Coach. Once you have completed your full commitment for the year we will be offering a refund of your fundraising (Value $35.00). We will however expect that your commitment has been met to both the league and the players.

EQUIPMENT
Equipment requirements will be the same as last year. The only exception is that knee pads are now mandatory. A motion was passed at the Annual Meeting of Queen City Minor Box Lacrosse, that all players from Novice to Midget are now required to wear knee pads. To be effective the knee pads must offer protection but not be too bulky.

LEAGUE SHORTS
We will again offer you the opportunity to purchase shorts with the QCMBL logo. These are not mandatory. The cost of the shorts will remain at $20.00. Please indicate on your registration form if you require a pair.

FUNDRAISING
We are again going to be offering the opportunity for all players to chose whether they would like to sell chocolates or pay an additional fee of $35.00. Please indicate your preference when completing the registration form and include the appropriate amount with your registration cheque. Once you have indicated that you wish to sell chocolates, a case will be ordered for you and may not be returned.

REFEREES
QCMBL is again looking to recruit new referees. First priority will be given to those with lacrosse experience.
Please indicate on the registration form if you and/or your child are interested in refereeing.

All referees (including returning referees) will be required to attend a Referees Clinic held in Regina (April 5 tentative date). The charge for this clinic is $50.00, which QCMBL will refund to the referee after he/she has worked five or more games. The reason for this is to assure QCMBL of the referee’s commitment to work when called upon.

Referees will be responsible to purchase an official SLA referee jersey at a cost of $25.00. These can be purchased through QCMBL or directly from Sask. Lacrosse.

COACHING CLINICS
QCMBL requires coaches for all age divisions and is committed to providing these volunteers with the necessary training courses. A Level 1 & 2 Technical clinic will be held one weekend in April (dates to be confirmed). These are lacrosse specific clinics and will leave you feeling confident and comfortable to coach even though you may not have any playing experience. Coaching theory classes are offered by Sask. Sport. Level 1 clinic dates have already been set for February, March, April and May. QCMBL will provide funding for coaches to become certified. Please contact Kim Maher @ 525-0054 if you are interested in coaching and would like more information about the clinics.

PROVINCIALS
Queen City Minor Box Lacrosse will have the opportunity to send one team from Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget and Junior divisions to Provincials. This year they will be held in the following centers: (these are still tentative)
Pee Wee July 4 – 6 Swift Current
Bantam July 4 – 6 Prince Albert
Midget July 11 – 13 Moose Jaw
Junior To Be Announced

PLAYOFFS
Teams will compete throughout the season for the opportunity to represent QCMBL at provincials. There will not be any year-end league playoffs.

In closing, it is our hope that you and your child will enjoy another great season of Lacrosse and we look forward to receiving your registration form and fees as soon as possible.
