Field Trip along Route 99, from Highway 6 to Valeport Marsh

Qu'Appelle River, looking east

On April 13, 2003, a number of brave souls ignored the threatening early morning clouds to join the postponed field trip wandering along the Qu'Appelle Valley between highway 6 and the Valeport Marsh. We began at the east end of the route, with our first major stop only a kilometre or so from highway 6.

Birders overlooking a flooded area

We observed a variety of birds - some returning to the area for the summer, some passing through on their way back north. The list included Canada geese and Snow geese, pelicans, Shovellers and Mallards, larks, bluebirds, sparrows, and a couple of bald eagles. Flowers were beginning to appear, with crocuses sighted at several locations (including some uncommon white crocuses).

A bird's-eye view

In the photo on the left, we have a bird's-eye view of the group. Fortunately for the birds, this is not a hunting group... Below,, we see a close-up of some crocuses at the picnic ground adjacent to the Valeport Marsh.

Crocuses

The Qu'Appelle River was full to the banks and moving quickly, with much of the valley bottom showing water areas, but the upland slopes were frequently quite dry. A fun day was had by all.
