Q. What kind of equipment do I need?

Outdoor Training:

A good pair of running shoes (not training, cross-training, basketball, etc.) are needed.  They do not need to be expensive, but should be designed for running (eg. light, decent cushioning, etc.) to minimize injuries.

A sports bag to hold the following:  water bottle (filled with water); touque, gloves, sweater, sweats, rain jacket and pants (for wet weather).  Do not underdress for outdoor training--athletes who are not dressed properly for the weather (eg. no jacket or sweats on a cold day/night) are putting themselves at risk of illness.

A skipping rope for stretching and training.  A binder to keep your information (and a pen to write things down).

Indoor Training and Competition Season:

bullet Track spikes are suggested for all sprinters and jumpers.  These are available at Track & Trail and Western Cycle at a discounted price.  Club members will often sell outgrown spikes to the younger athletes at very cheap prices.
bullet Black shorts (short-length, not basketball style) are recommended for meets.
bullet A team singlet is required for meets.  This is available from the Club at a price of $25.
bulletA basic sports watch (with lap timer) such as Timex Ironman, or equivalent is important so that an athlete can keep track of their tempos and laps.

Q. What are the ages of athletes that are accepted?

The Club will accept mature athletes between the ages of 12 and up.   Athletes are expected to have a very high level of maturity to train with the Club, and this is the reason for the age requirement.

Q. Do I have to attend all practices?

Practices are not compulsory.  Track and field is an individual sport.  However, athletes who miss practices regularly will miss out on the teaching and training progressions for events and conditioning. It is not the coach's responsibility to make up for an athlete who misses practices.  Where possible, coaches will try to provide athletes with a schedule of specific event training, including the days that these events are covered.

Q. What if I think it is too cold or rainy to practice?  How will I know if it is on or not?

This is usually more of a problem with out of town people, trying to decide whether to drive in or not.  If the weather is fairly miserable (too cold or wet), it may not be worth it to attend a practice outdoors.  The risk of injury may be greater than the benefits of training.  It would be better to do a good workout at home.  You will be shown many exercises or activities that will keep up your training.  Coaches will attempt to attend all practices.

Q. How is my coach assigned to me?

Coaches are assigned to athletes based on their age, ability, event specialties, and their desire to compete in meets.  Due to the limited number of coaches, each athlete may not be able to train with the coach of their choice.  The best way to ensure adequate coaching levels is to become involved as a coach or helper with the Club.  Training is always available for those who are interested.
