Celebrating
104 Years of Praise
Worship
and Service
On August 23, 1882 a train arrived
in the "Pile O' Bones" district of Saskatchewan. The huge stack
of buffalo bones was amassed by Indians in the belief that the buffalo
would return to the bones of their forefathers. "Pile O' Bones" was
renamed "Regina" - the Latin word for queen - in honour of Queen Victoria.
A new name was given and a new life was begun as settlers moved into the
area to set up homes and businesses.
The Salvation
Army's love for God and dependence on The
HOLY SPIRIT'S POWER spread across the Canadian West like a mighty prairie
fire. And so it was on April 21, 1895, that Captain L. Isaacson and
her assistant, Lieutenant McGee, open the ministry of The Salvation Army
and the "Blood and Fire" echoed for the first time through the our city.
The population of Regina at that
time was approximately 1500, and civic authorities, existing religious
denominations and the general public extended a welcome to these two Army
officers. From this small beginning, Regina Citadel (Church) has
grown to be a recognized Family Worship Centre,
and Christians have gone out from here to the length and breadth of Canada,
indeed the World, to minister to the Spiritual and physical needs of humankind.
Amongst the ministries of The Salvation
Army, was the dynamic minstry to Youth! The young people's meetings
were held in the lower hall which seated one hundred and fifty, but at
times this was crowded and some classes were held in the upstairs of the
sanctuary. There were so many active youth that they would hold the
own street ministry outreach every Sunday, using only a drum that they
had purchased themselves.
The Ministries of the church sections
are still very effective and powerful with the community. Participation
in services in churches, centres, Wascana Park, the annual Rotary Carol
Service, the Easton's Friendship Night, plus maintaining all other ministry
activities within the church, speak of Christianity with "it's sleeves
rolled up." The Salvation Army Regina Downtown Church is actively
involved in proclaiming the good news of the
Lord Jesus Christ to a world in need. The history of Regina Church
has and is a part of HIS STORY. A story of
lives changed and made new, through the power of Christ Jesus.
It is a story of Christian people, who by the grace
of God, have laboured in love for the extension of the Kingdom
of God.
