Healthy Horizons held its 27th Annual Conference on October 19th and 20th. The Association is an educational organization whose goal, is to encourage individuals toward optimum well-being and accepting the responsibility to achieve this in their own lives. Sharing information came in several ways: display tables featured information from revitalized water, to food supplements, to rebounding and much more; people found each other, coming from Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Toronto, the United States, etc., and speakers gave input on the following: Marcel Wolfe Maria Low Healthy Horizons 26th Annual Fall Conference was held November 3 & 4, 2001. A wealth of information was provided by our speakers, a brief overview of their presentations follows. CONFERENCE SPEAKERS Klaus Ferlow, a "lifetime herbalist" from Germany, shared a vast knowledge of herbs and their uses. Forty-six years of experience with herbs well qualified him to speak on "Herbs, A Vital Part of Health". He stressed the need for education in our competitive world ... where $32 billion a day are spent by Canadian pill poppers! Presently located in Mission, BC, Ferlow Bros. manufactures the purest in herbal products, including shampoos, soaps, etc. Klaus Ferlow is a regular contributor to the Healthy Horizons journal. Leonard Pigott, native to Saskatchewan, agricultural expert, livestock specialist, gave us valuable input for survival in a world threatened with deterioration of our resources of land, air, and water. "Holistic management applies to everyone," he assured us, not just farmers. We are losing our biological diversity, which leads to diminishing our quality of life, and calls for restoration of our water and mineral cycle. The challenge is the future landscape. How will we make decisions? Will it be the quality of life before profit? Will our priorities be family, freedom, clean air, water, happiness; or will we continue to jeopardize these priorities by our escalating standards of living? Lyndon Raugust spoke on "Learn How To Read Your Body". Migraine headaches paved the way to the discovery that alternate health methods could be the answer to vibrant good health. Lyndon is a Sho Tai practitioner with two years of experience in guiding others. His services include orthotics, muscle energy therapy, herbal products, iridology, ear, teeth, and tongue analysis. Dr. Carolyn DeMarco, leading advocate for women's health and alternate medicine, caught the interest of all in her two presentations: "Menopause The Good, the Bad and the Exciting" and secondly, "Grief is Hard Work". DeMarco's talks reflected reverence for the human body, respect for creation, for the space required by the person experiencing the pain of loss. We learned that unless soy products are organic, all of them have already been genetically modified. We learned that the medical model treats menopause as a disease, instead of a phase natural to the body. To live "longer, healthier and better", we learned that we have what we need in natural medicine. We need to "align yourself with your inner purposes", and take care of the "unfinished business" in emotional and spiritual balance. "Estrogen-mimickers" are found not only in bottled supplements, but even in cosmetics. All menopausal symptoms can be controlled by vitamins, minerals, Chinese medicine, herbal supports. Dr. DeMarco is author of several books including, "Take Charge of Your Body", famous across the country for women's health information. The newer book, "Dr. DeMarco Answers Your Questions" (Well Woman Press 2000) is available by calling 1-877-871-9371. James Gomez, born in India, is presently employed as Assistant Professor in the department of Community Health and Epidemiology, Dr. Gomez spoke on "Adverse Health Effects from Hormonally Active and Endocrine Disrupting Pesticides", and "Reproductive Toxicity from Occupational and Environmental Disrupting Pesticides". Environmental contamination issues which seem to affect us, how we are exposed to chemical substances and what they do to us ... we were asked to become aware of how people think, to know the perceptions of people in regards to the chemicals they are using, and why they use these products. Chemicals and mixture of chemicals are responsible for lower sperm counts,
extinction of species, feminization of males and masculinization of females,
an increasing incidence of cancer. Factors which influence our lifestyle, age, diet, smoking, poverty, infection, hunger. The 25th Anniversary Conference was held October 14 -15, 2000 at Fort San in
Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan. Exposure to chemical sprays have a direct negative effect on man's ability to father children as shown in the results of a study undertaken by the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Reproduction sperm supply was almost immediately lowered by contact with the sprays and was not quickly eradicated from the bodies of the men who participated in the studies. In his presentation, Mr. Laird pointed out that as an alternative to chemical use, bugs could be controlled by using intercropping to repel insects. Intercropping means planting two crops in the same field at the same time. For example, canola sewn at the regular rate and then barley at 20% rate. The flea beetles and army worms that destroy the canola crop dislike barley and the canola crop can be saved without the use of chemicals. Mr. Laird made good use of the short length of time allotted to him. You can hear his complete presentation by purchasing his tape on organic farming. (Contact Healthy Horizons for information on purchasing a tape.)
As Healthy Horizons members, we have every right to make it known to producers and Governments that we want farmers to produce the most healthy
foods possible. Perhaps it would be helpful to have any organizations that we are associated with join with us to encourage the healthiest food
production possible. In her spare time, she has completed a course taught by Dr. Loomis on testing for enzyme sufficiency by using urinalysis and does this testing in her own home. Her talk at the Healthy Horizons Conference was filled with facts and suggestions of what each of us can do to help ourselves to keep or restore our own health. Reference books she recommended were "Enzymes, the Key To Health" by Dr. Loomis, "The Enzymes Cure" by Dr. Lita Lee, and "The Stress of Life" by Hans Selye.
We certainly owe Charmaine a debt of gratitude for the time and effort she
spent preparing and sharing some of her knowledge with us. In 1976 he began doing nutritional therapy and preventative medicine at the chemical dependency unit. He also began using nutritional programs and supplements used in alternative medicine for cancer patients. Because of this, he was forced to resign from the hospital staff. From there, several things happened. First of all, the "Spirit of God and the Spirit of Truth were already working on my spirit and mind and I responded to Him." He found that the cause of any sickness may be found by taking a history of any illness that had occurred within the past six months of the onset of any illness. From this Dr. Briggs got interested in hypoglycemia diets. Then came the battle over laetrile. In 1978, he attended a meeting in Houston, Texas which talked about cancer and the environmental factors which cause it.
In his talk, "What is the Need?", he also demonstrated how well muscle
testing helps to locate the problems. Dr. Briggs second talk, "How Do We Avoid or Correct?" told of his
experience with alcoholics in his work at the Minot Hospitals, and considerable success by helping patients with nutrition, vitamins, We appreciate Dr. Briggs attending our Founding Convention and returning for our 25th Conference. We also appreciate Dr. Briggs and his wife, Connie, singing two duets at the Sunday morning service. They are very talented singers!
MICHAEL CULBERT The mind-body connection is real. Michael feels that any doctor not praying for his patient is not practicing good medicine. The San Francisco and the Kansas City studies show that prayer works, but we don't know of any insurance companies that cover it! Officially he is the Information Director for International Bio-Care Hospital in Mexico where they use what they describe as "Integrated Therapy". "There is not a single thing that we do in Mexico that you should not be able to do right here," reported Mr. Culbert. There is no way that a brief review of his two talks can do justice to the wealth of information he dispensed in his allotted time. He has at least 25 years experience and has extensive knowledge gained by investigation of medical matters in many countries.
You may purchase the tapes of his two talks or read his book "Medical Armageddon". The facts he states will amaze you. He believes that this practice is wonderful and that we are authors of our own misfortunes. In the late 1960¹s he thought that large doses of vitamins and a healthy diet was the answer. A hyperactive child is a treatable child and the hyperactivity is something that warns the parents to pay attention and do something about it. After all, it took 50 years for doctors to recognize that eating limes would cure scurvy. Diet is so much a part of us. He recommends eating real live foods, preferably raw, and drink plenty of water, and to do it all your life. It's so important to realize that when you are sick it is your problem and no one else's. You are the one who has to do something about it. Both Dr. Green and his wife have encountered health problems and give credit to diet as part of the answer. His talk contained much more information which is available on audio tape. It was wonderful to have him as one of our speakers and we thank him for being with us. It's very reassuring to see him advocating self-help as he did when Healthy Horizons was organized 25 years ago. Submitted by Iona McConnell-Munro |
