Where we've been - The Regina Music Festival Association is one of 49 festivals under the aegis of the Saskatchewan Music Festival association. It is estimated that 55,000 people particpate in Saskatchewan Music Festivals annually.
Since 1909, there has been an annual spring Festival of arts competition (music and speech) for the young people of Regina and area, and thousands of children have participated. The Festival provides amateur musicians and speakers with an evaluation of their performance by professional adjudicators drawn from all parts of Canada in the areas of voice, speech arts, piano, strings, organ, brass, woodwinds, and choirs. The Festival runs for approximately 10 days in late April and early May. In recent years, there have been close to 2,500 entries with participants ranging from preschoolers to grandparents, although the majority are from ages 8 to 20 years. Winners in local festivals come together to compete at the Provincial finals which are held alternately in Regina and Saskatoon. From there, a few of the most talented compete nationally as Saskatchewan representatives.
Not for profit, but for love of the arts - The Regina Music Festival Association is a registered charitable, volunteer organization, and as such may offer the usual income tax benefits to its financial supporters. Volunteers work at the Festival as secretaries to the adjudicator and as door personnel. The Exective is also made up of volunteers who willingly give of their "spare time" outside of their regular employment to organize this festival of the arts.
The Regina Music Festival Association depends heavily on the donations of various organizations with Regina, and on the generosity of people like you to maintain its unbroken record of annual Festivals. The Festival costs approximately $50,000/year to put on. This includes the costs associated with advertising, hiring adjudicators, renting space for the competitions, renting instruments and equipment for performances, printing programs, purchasing entry forms, leasing of office space and all office supply costs. We recieve only about 35% of this total from entry fees paid by participants. Entry fees are kept as low as possible to ensure the Festival is accessible to all young people. The balance of the budget comes from admission fees, program sales, advertising, grants and donations. Because grants have tended to diminish for arts organizations, donations have assumed a greater importance. The Festival Association is open to all interested parties and is not affiliated with any service club, corporation or any government agency. If you wish to become a member of the RMFA you only to advise us of your interest. We would be most grateful for your assistance. If you, or someone you know, may be interested in helping the Regina Music Festival, whether through funding or the generous donation of your time, please contact us!
Contacting the Regina Music Festival
The members of the RMFA work very hard to present an exemplary Festival for your enjoyment each year. However, as with any undertaking which draws upon so many people, there are bound to be "problems" or oversights. If you have any comments which you feel may contribute to an improved Festival for next year, or if you would like to volunteer for membership in the RMFA, you may contact us by:
Calling the Regina Music Festival Association Office at (306) 585-8589 between November and June.
"Snail mail"-ing us at our new mailing address
Or e-mailing us - reginamusicfestival@sasktel.net
The RMFA also maintains an office throughout the Festival at our primary Festival site - Luther College on the University of Regina campus. Our office, Room 213, will be open daily during the Festival from 8:00am to 5:00 pm for questions and comments.
Admission and Program Charges
The RMFA is required to charge for admissions and programs in an attempt to offset our ever increasing costs. The entry fees paid by our contestants are intentionally far below the costs of operating the Festival. Your admission fees assist in covering the shortfall. Please accept the charges as your donation to the less privileged.
